Propagation Lab

From seed

The slowest route and the most complete — a whole life from the first leaf.

Best season

Late winter to spring for most, with warmth.

Roots in

Germination 1–8 weeks depending on species; years to a mature plant.

You'll need

  • Fresh seed (many tropical seeds die within weeks)
  • Seed tray or small pots
  • Fine, sterile seed mix
  • Heat mat
  • Cover for humidity
  • Bright light or a grow light

Step by step

  1. 1

    Source fresh seed honestly

Many 'houseplant seeds' sold online are fake or dead — monstera and philodendron seed loses viability in weeks. Buy from specialist growers or harvest from a fruiting plant.

  2. 2

    Soak and sow shallow

Soak overnight if the seed coat is hard. Sow on the surface or barely covered; most tropical seeds need light or at least warmth to germinate.

  3. 3

    Warmth is non-negotiable

22–28 °C (72–82 °F) soil temperature. A heat mat under the tray makes the difference between weeks and never.

  4. 4

    Humidity and light

Cover to hold humidity; bright indirect light or a grow light 20–30 cm above.

  5. 5

    Prick out after true leaves

Once seedlings have their second set of leaves, move them into individual small pots.

  6. 6

    Grow on slowly

Feed at quarter strength; pot on only when roots fill the pot. Expect years, not months.

Why?

Seed is the only method that creates genetic variety — every other method clones. That is why seed-grown plants surprise you, and why growers use it for breeding but cuttings for consistency. It also teaches the full life cycle better than anything else.

What success looks like

  • Week 1–3First root then a loop of stem pushes up. Damping off (sudden collapse) is the main risk here.
  • Week 3–8Seed leaves (cotyledons) then the first true leaves, which look nothing like the adult plant.
  • Month 3–12Juvenile leaves. Monstera will not fenestrate for a year or more.

When it goes wrong

  • Nothing germinates

Why: Dead seed (very common) or too cold.

Fix: Buy fresh from a reputable source; use bottom heat.

  • Seedlings topple at soil level

Why: Damping-off fungi in wet, still, crowded conditions.

Fix: Sterile mix, air movement, water from below, thin the seedlings.

Plants that suit this method

  • Coffee plant
  • Citrus
  • Avocado (from the stone)
  • Palms
  • Cacti and succulents
  • Asparagus fern
  • Bird of paradise (very slow)

Other methods

Every timeline here is a typical range. Your room's warmth and light set the real pace — that is why the Lab asks you to log the start and watch, rather than count days.
